E3 Monday - Sony PS3 Sales Projections

Posted on May 09, 2006 at 2:09am AST (GMT-04:00)

Following on to the story below, Sony believes they will sell 2 million units of the PS3 at launch, and 4 million by the end of 2006. See chart below.

I think these numbers are rather ambitious, especially at the price point involved, but only if one looks at the PS3 as a gaming system.

If one looks at the PS3 as a very capable Blu-Ray player, Sony’s forecasts may not be far off, and in fact may be the result of being production bound.

But, in order to convince the masses that Blu-Ray is the wave of the future in home movie entertainment, Sony and its partners will have a lot of difficult work ahead of them. This is where Sony’s experience with consumers will come into play.

E3 Monday - Sony PS3 Controller

Posted on May 08, 2006 at 9:39pm AST (GMT-04:00)

Well, all the comments about the ugly boomerang shaped PS3 controller shown at last year’s E3 hit home.

The new PS3 controller looks just like the PS2 and PS1 controllers, but adds 6 Degrees of Freedom, sensing the tilt and acceleration of the controller as you hold and move it.

E3 Monday - The Sony Press Conference

Posted on May 08, 2006 at 6:37pm AST (GMT-04:00)

I’m at Sony Picture Studios in Culver City this after, waiting for the Sony press conference to start on Stage 15. There are over a thousand other media folks waiting as well, enjoying Sony’s open bar (my favorite beverage hers is the 0 carb XS Energy Drink from XS Gear).

As a way for the media to get some of the press conference content, Sony has provided hotspots here where journalists with PSPs could download images, MP4 video clips and more.

Screen shots and trailers included ones from the following forthcoming games: ATV Offroad Fury Pro, Gangs of London, God of War II (pictured below), Killzone Liberation, NBA 07, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Rogue Galaxy, SingStar, SOCOM: Combined Assault (pictured below), SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 2, and World Tour Soccer 06.

God of War II

SOCOM: Combined Assault

It promises to be an interesting event, considering Sony had originally indicated at last year’s E3 that it would be launching the P3 in May 2006. Now that the date has slipped to November (partially on rumors of Blu-Ray drive availability issues), Sony’s pitch today will be telling.

Having seen HD-DVD players and titles on sale at Best Buy this past weekend, it remains to be seen if the PS3’s delayed release will hurt Blu-Ray’s chances.

At least, with the PS3 release only a half year away, we should be able to see real demos here in Los Angeles this week, instead of last year’s mock-ups (which were breathtaking).

E3 Monday - Sony’s Marketing Presence

Posted on May 08, 2006 at 6:20pm AST (GMT-04:00)

One of the first things that struck me today at the Los Angeles Convention Center was Sony’s bold new marketing campaign - “Play Beyond”.

One visual of that new campaign is the extreme rock-paper-scissors visual in my previous blog entry (see exterior shot of the LACC entrance in entry below). And directly below is another huge image on the side of the adjacent Staples Center, featuring a skate boarder about to take on an extreme half pipe.

pic

Yet another visual shows someone on a gigantic swing set which looks like a quarter mile wide stone arch.

I’m sure Sony’s marketing staff has come up with a nice, clear, concise message about what this new campaign is meant to say. In my words it tells me that Sony is portraying itself (and presumably via the forthcoming PS3) as “taking games to the extreme”.

E3 Monday - Gloomy Skies and Optimism

Posted on May 08, 2006 at 6:09pm AST (GMT-04:00)

Los Angeles doesn’t quite seem the same when it’s overcast and dark, and the sun is nowhere to be seen. One can only hope the weather here this week is not a precursor to the future of the video game industry (photos below).

That said, even though the show floor doesn’t open for another two days, there’s a quiet sort of energy at the Los Angeles Center, as exhibitors prepare for an onslaught of retailers, media, and anyone else who has managed to wangle their way past the scrutiny of registration desk staff.

Strict warnings indicating the show is a trade only event can be found at every entrance, and show staff I spoke to said they had already seen a fair number of false IDs presented during the media pre-registration process. Even more outrageous is that E3 show staff had found E3 Media Badges for sale on eBay for as much as $500 already. Desperation among the younger set creates a lucrative black market.

Over 400 exhibitors are expected to show their latest wares, which include a vast number of new video game titles for consoles, handhelds, and PCs, including almost a thousand “never before seen” games and products (E3’s words, not mine).

Whee! We! Wee! Wii!

Posted on April 28, 2006 at 10:47am AST (GMT-04:00)

Nintendo has announced the name it plans to market the gaming console formerly known as Revolution under - it’s “Wii”, pronounced like the English “We” (as in “us").

Introducing ... Wii.
As in “we.”
While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because, it’s really not about you or me.
It’s about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything.

From http://revolution.nintendo.com

How cutesy. The new name is actually too cute.

As a father of young children, I simply cannot rid my mind of associating “Wii” with “Daddy, I need to go wee-wee”. Will that be the battlecry of the next Nintendo generation? Will they subvert the meaning of going Number One to mean they want to play video games? I hope not.

And while Nintendo says the name will be easily remembered around the world, regardless of language - in the few languages I know enough of to try and pronounce “Wii” in (those languages being German, Czech, Dutch, and Papiamentu), it sounds nothing like the English pronounciation in any of those.

Nintendo also touts the lack of confusion of the new name and not needing to abbreviate - a not-so-subtle swat at Sony’s PlayStation 2 a.k.a. PS2. I would be concerned that the new name is too generic, and without a prefix of “Nintendo”, has no clear meaning. I cringe at the thought of my son or daughter asking friends over to play with their “Wii”. I am sure there are laws against that in most localities.

In any case, time will tell whether the new name for the console-formerly-known-as-Revolution is a dud or a smash (or just merely ho-hum, like the Nintendo GameCube).
